Last month we were lucky enough to host UK-based knitwear designer, Anna Maltz for a weekend of classes here at Fancy Tiger Crafts. Several of the staff and myself took her Hozkwoz Hat class and we recently finished the hats we started with Anna!
I love getting to take classes from designers - I always come away with new tips, tricks, and techniques. Anna Maltz's classes were especially intriguing since she has developed her own style of knitting she calls " Marlisle." Marlisle involves knitting while holding two strands of yarn together of different weights and there is often a colorwork element that is achieved by knitting with just one of the strands. Within this technique, there are all sorts of new increases, decreases and other stitches I had never executed in my almost 20 years of knitting!
In addition to learning Marlisle, I also got a glimpse into Anna's mind and let me tell you, she is a brilliant knitter and pattern writer. Her patterns are smart, interesting and unusual. This hat is knit from the top down (a new cast on!) and she includes directions on how to measure the "x" on the top of the hat as a gauge swatch. This means that the beginning of the hat is your gauge swatch and you can knit with almost any gauge and be sure the hat will still fit - brilliant! On top of all of this, Marlisle is just fun to knit.
I chose to knit my hat in Heirloom Romney in Butternut as my "main color" held with Brooklyn Tweed's Arbor in Nightfall.
Thanks for coming Anna! We loved learning this unique technique from you.
