Gardening Eggpron Tutorial

We just hatched another tutorial, this time for a stylish gardening eggpron! The perfect summertime gardening accessory, this cute little apron has individual pockets for egg collection as well as larger pockets for holding seed packets, tools and your ample garden haul. There is even an optional shovel/rake hook. Everything you need to have a cute and organized gardening season.

For our Eggpron we picked Elizabeth Grubaugh's playful and eclectic Garden Roost fabric line paired with Robert Kaufman's simple woven solids for the most perfectly themed garden apron we could ever imagine. Seriously, does it get any more EGGcellent?!?

Finished Dimenstions: 24" x 16" with a 62" tie
All seams are 1/2” unless otherwise stated

MATERIALS
1/2 yd or fat quarters of two fabrics for Seed Pocket and Egg Pocket (selection of Elizabeth Grubaugh Garden Roost Fabric)
3/4 yd of Main Fabric (Robert Kaufman Yarn-dyed Essex in Seafoam)
Water Soluble Pen

Egg Pocket: 9” x 22”

APRON BODY ASSEMBLY

Hem: Press both of the shorter 17” sides of your main apron piece in 1/4”. Roll both hems another 1/4” under and press so that raw edge is concealed. Now press the bottom 25” edge of the main apron piece up the same way you did the sides. Leave the top edge of your apron raw.

Topstitch: Stitch around the three pressed edges of the apron at 1/8”

 
Assemble the Tie:

Attach Tie to Main Apron Piece: Press the apron tie in half. Slip the main apron piece between the open edge of your apron tie - the main part of your apron should fit between the center panel (25” tie piece) of your apron tie. Pin the apron in place.

Topstitch Apron Tie: Stitch around all 4 edges of your apron tie at 1/8.”

EGG POCKET ASSEMBLY

Sew: Fold your pocket in half with right sides together and long sides touching- you should have a 22” x 4.5” rectangle. Sew along the three open edges, leaving a 2” opening in the middle of one short side of the pocket. Trim the seams and corners and turn the pocket so right sides are facing out. Press.

Topstitch: Stitch across the top edge of your pocket (the edge with no seam) at 1/8.”

Create the Gussets:

Mark Gussets: On the back side of the pocket: mark small dots at 2 1/8,” 2 5/8,” 3 1/4” and 5 1/8” from left edge. Repeat these measurement markings 3 more times, beginning your first measurement from the final marking you created on the previous set.
Mark Topstitching Line: On the front side of your pocket, mark a line that runs the height of your pocket every 5 1/8” - 3 total times using a water soluble pen.
Fold Gussets: On the back side of you pocket, fold your 2 1/8”  dot in towards your 2 5/8” dot. Now fold your 3 1/4” dot in towards the same 2 5/8” dot. Press this gusset with your iron and pin if necessary. Repeat with 3 additional gussets.
Baste: With your machine set to a longer stitch length than normal, baste across the bottom of your egg pocket carefully catching each gusset.

Set this pocket aside.

SEED POCKET ASSEMBLY  

Sew: Fold your pocket in half with right sides together and long sides touching- you should have a 17.5” x 7.5” rectangle. Sew along the three open edges, leaving a 2” opening in the middle of one short side of the pocket. Trim the seams and corners and turn the pocket so right sides are facing out. Press. (see diagrams for the first and second Egg Pocket Assembly instructions)

Topstitch: Stitch across the top edge of your pocket (the edge with no seam) at 1/8.”

Mark Topstitching Line: On the front side of your pocket, mark a line that runs the height of your pocket at 5 1/8” using a water soluble pen.

Set this pocket aside.

FINAL ASSEMBLY

Pin Seed Pocket: Lay the seed pocket 3 3/4” from either edge of the main apron and 2” from the bottom - You may want to mark these lines with a water soluble pen to make it a bit easier. Pin in place.

Pin Egg Pocket: Lay the egg pocket 3 3/4” from either edge of the main apron and 1.5” from the apron top (not the tops of the tie). Pin in place.

Attach Pockets: Topstitch at 1/8” around the 2 sides and the bottom of both pockets. Remove basting stitches from the bottom of the egg pocket. Topstitch on the 5 1/8” line on the seed pocket (previously marked) and on the 3 topstitching lines on the egg pocket.

ATTACH OPTIONAL SHOVEL HOOK

Assemble Shovel Hook:

Attach Shovel Hook: Measure 1” from apron edge on apron tie and make a mark. From your first mark, measure an additional 2” and make a second mark. Line up the right edge of your shovel hook with the right mark on your apron tie, right sides together. Stitch in place at a 1/4". Line up the left edge of your shovel hook with the left mark on your apron tie, right sides together. Stitch in place at 1/4”. If you have completed this correctly, your shovel hook will have a circular shape.
