Caitlin's Open-Out Box Pouch

We recently started stocking a few of Aneela Hoey's patterns for storage pouches.  Her patterns are unique and smartly designed. This is my second time making the Open Out Box Pouch, and I'm so pleased with the result!

Alexia Abegg's Sunshine fabric made up in an Open-Out-Box-Pouch

I was definitely feeling the Spring fever when I picked out fabrics for this project, so I picked up a Sunshine-y print by Alexia Abegg, paired it with my favorite greens, and set to work!

Open-Out Box Pouch expanding gusset detail

With the expanding gusset and curved shape, this is unlike the typical zipper pouch I've made non-stop since I started sewing. The construction might seem counter-intuitive the first time you make one, but just trust Aneela's top-notch instructions, and you shouldn't have any issues!

The zipper can be a little tricky, especially since it is sewn on a curve. I used binding clips, as the pattern suggests, to secure the zipper before sewing, but you could also use wonder clips. I found it easiest to secure the zipper to the lining with binding clips, and then baste into place before adding the exterior fabric to the zipper sandwich. Just make sure your basting stitches are within the 1/4" seam allowance.

Caitlin Vannoy's Open-Out Box Pouch filled with yarn and knitting notions

The pouch is nice and compact when zipped up, but also stands up like a little bowl once unzipped.  This would make a great knitting bag for a small, on-the-go project, or you could use it to store notions, art supplies, makeup, or even snacks!

I’ve made this twice and am confused by the zip, could you talk me through how to use the open ended zip please? I love the pouch

I am making this project and am very frustrated that the instructions don’t indicate which is height and width for the gusset, so I have had to rip it out and remake. I looked for information on her website and others have posted questions about the gusset and not gotten replies. (I found the lack of reply information as a comment on someone’s review.)
