Is Jaime a Ruffle Kinda Gal?
I've recently been attracted to ruffles and I'm not sure how I feel about them. I mean, I love them, but can I wear them? Am I a ruffle person? Can one wear Teva's with ruffles? There is only one way to find out... sew up a couple of ruffly items and then see how they look and if I wear them. First up - a Florence Top by Merchant and Mills in a petal pink linen.
Pattern: Florence Top (max bust 42")
Fabric: Graph Linen Yarn Dye in Petal (1.75 yd)
Size : 12 (for size 35.75" bust)
Modifications: none
This is a unique shaped top that features buttons down the back. The top swoops up in the back, but a larger ruffle means that it has the same hemline all the way around. It's been a long time since I've sewn a Merchant and Mills pattern and I have to admit, they used to be a bit clunky. It might have been the jump from UK to US terminology in sewing, but I felt like this pattern had great instructions and diagrams and was easy to follow. Bravo Merchant and Mills!
The instructions particularly on attaching and gathering the huge ruffle made the daunting task come together quite easily. Also, just an FYI, a ruffle is called a "frill" in the UK.
I don't think I need to say anything about these 100% linens from Candian-based Gordon fabrics. They are as dreamy to sew with and wear as they look. I cannot praise them enough! I've already cut some of another check yarn-dyed linen from them for a dress. Linen all summer long!
My overall verdict is still out... while everyone gave me compliments on my new shirt, it is a lot of ruffle! It will take some getting used to, but I'm excited to wear this some more and see how my feelings on frill evolve.
