Caitlin's Fuzzy Flette Mittens

When Colorado got its first snow, I realized my little one needed some mittens to keep her hands warm this winter! I didn’t like any of the ready-to-wear options I found, so I started researching patterns and came across the adorable Penelope Polar Bear Mitten pattern by Button & Blue. The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, so Flette was the perfect match for ultimate coziness!



Yarn: Flette in Pink Clay 28 and Natural 00, 1 skein of each + black yarn scraps for face

Size Made: 0-6M
Modifications: Used smaller needles to obtain gauge, added a crochet chain

The mittens are knit flat so you can duplicate stitch the ears and face, and then seamed with a mattress stitch. This construction makes the pattern really beginner friendly. The designer even includes a Knitting Techniques guide if you’re new to the craft.



I didn’t bother swatching, and after a few rows I could tell the mittens were going to be huge. I ended up using size 1 needles for the ribbing, and size 4 for the stockinette section. It was admittedly a bit of a pain to knit boucle yarn with such tiny needles, but it was worth the effort. They’re slightly big now, but she’s only 2 months old and will be growing fast! The 0-6M pattern is thumbless, but if you’re knitting these in the toddler sizes, the pattern includes thumbs.



I added a simple crochet chain to be sure these don’t get lost. I can easily thread it through the sleeves of her jacket and they won’t be going anywhere! Speaking of...aren’t they just perfect with the hand-stitched Lullaby Layette that Shawna gifted us?! The combo is too cute!
