About the breed:
Leicester Longwool are a historically significant breed.  First bred in the 1700's in the UK, word spread quickly about this breed with it's long, healthy, lustrous coats of ringlets, and a breed good for both meat and wool. They were so desirable that George Washington added this breed to his flock. In fact, you can see these sheep today if you visit Colonial Williamsburg, as they are considered rare and historically significant.

Today these sheep are primarily raised for their fleeces because their fiber is prized among hand spinners. In other words--hand spinners are keeping this breed alive and helping in the preservation efforts! How cool is that? Their fiber is remarkable. It dyes very well, felts beautifully, it's famous for its lustrous appearance, but mostly it is just an absolute joy to spin.
