Learn to make your own pair of handmade leather sandals in this four hour Virtual Sandal Making Workshop hosted by Fancy Tiger Crafts and led via Zoom by Stace Fulwiler. Women, Men and teens (with adult simultaneously taking the workshop) can join. Both child and adult must be registered for class.

In this workshop, you will craft your own sandals using your choice of leather, traditional craft techniques, and tools sent directly to your door. The versatile simplicity of your leather sandals will provide years of wear and they will become more beautiful with age, forming to your feet and acquiring a rich patina. We will make sandals with leather soles, leather heels, and leather uppers.

Some history about leather sandal making: Bespoke handmade leather sandal making shops once dotted coastal towns throughout California, though this craft has become rare as shoe production has moved away from artisan methods & materials. These days, you have to travel abroad for custom leather sandals. Stace works to revive this traditional way of shoemaking by teaching sandal making workshops throughout California - and now, anyone in the US can learn through her Virtual Sandal Making Workshops.

What we will do: On Sunday, August 2nd at 12pm MT, we will log in via Zoom and Stace will teach you (and eight other people) how to make your own handmade leather sandals in the comfort of your home. All the tools and supplies you will need will be sent to you before the workshop. This workshop will take around four hours, and Stace will be there with you every step of the way until you’re finished.

During the workshop, you will learn:

  • How to form your leather soles to have arch support
  • How to cut your leather straps, insoles & midsoles
  • How to assemble & fit your sandals to your feet
  • How to attach a leather heel
  • How to use shoe glue (all-purpose cement) to securely assemble your sandals.

How we will do it: Stace will send you the supplies and tools you will need to make yourself a custom pair of leather sandals. There are ten designs and a variety of leather options to choose from. Due to the ‘remote’ nature of choosing your designs & leather, you’ll select your first, second and third choice for leather colors, and Stace will be in touch with you before your sandal making kit is sent out.

No previous experience is necessary and this workshop is appropriate for all levels, however you’ll want to be comfortable using an Xacto knife, kneeling, bending, and crouching. Since we’ll be doing this workshop virtually, it will help if you feel comfortable working with your hands.

What you will need:

  • Viewing device to use Zoom (login information will be sent before the workshop starts)
  • Table to work on (a kitchen table or desk works great)
  • Cutting surface - cutting mat or kitchen cutting board
  • Hammer
  • Pencil
  • Optional: ruler
  • Purchase your supplies through Stace Fulwiler's website

How your sandals will be finished: Once you’ve finished your sandals, you will mail them back to Stace’s studio, where she’ll refine the edges on her belt sander and shave off any extra length or width. This is a quick process - your sandals will be on their way back to you in 1-3 days. If you live in the LA area, you are welcome to bring your sandals to Stace’s studio, watch her sand them down, and take them away. And if you have your own belt sander at home, you are welcome to finish your sandals yourself - Stace can send over a tutorial video of a sanding demonstration.
