This classic 2-ply laceweight yarn was developed with Shetland Museum and Archives as part of the Shetland Fine Lace Project. The yarn is worsted spun by Jamieson & Smith from the natural, undyed colours of pure bred Shetland Sheep to replicate the handspun yarns used in the finest Shetland lace items of the 1800s, such as Queen Victoria's stockings and items displayed at world exhibitions. The yarn has a distinct 'Shetland Halo' while knitting, which calms to a floating fairy-like haze after washing and finishing.
Shetland wool is an incredibly natural and sustainable fibre, and is world renowned for its fineness and warmth. Shetland Sheep graze on the islands' hills and beaches eating wild heather and seaweed. This diet, along with the not-so-great weather, makes Shetland wool soft, strong and warm. Jamieson and Smith purchases over 80% of the wool produced in Shetland. Their production plays an important part in sustaining Shetland's fragile crofting industry, as well as Shetland's textiles industry and heritage. J+S hand sorts and grade the wool and, to make sure they do not waste anything, the coarser parts of the fleece are used in carpets and mats. Jamieson & Smith continues to be staffed by Shetlanders and remains a stand alone company, in that the profits come back into the Shetland economy and are passed along to their number one priority, the wool producer. All J+S products are manufactured from 100% Real Shetland Wool from sheep that are born and bred on the islands.
