String piecing has been around since patchwork quilts were made with household sewing scraps.  This simple construction promises fun with color, and a secondary design which is created via the diagonals.  We’ll start by choosing fabrics (though students can bring any favorites from home) and go through block making and using a square ruler to trim fabric to size, before completing the quilt top.

Choose a size for your project.  Each of the options are made from 16 blocks.  As the block size grows (4” or 8” finished), so grows the project.  As with any project, bigger means more time.

  • Pillow Cover - 16"
  • Wall/Baby - 32"

Students should be comfortable using a rotary cutter and ruler to cut narrow strips of fabric.  They should also be comfortable sewing a consistent 1/4” seam.

Required Materials:

Pillow Cover:

  • Contrast - 1 FQ or 1/4 yd
  • Main - 1 yd total of 6-8 different fabrics (see below)

Wall/Baby:

  • Contrast - 1 FQ or 1/4 yd
  • Main - 3 yds total of 6-8 different fabrics (see below)

For great results, you’ll want about 6 - 8 different fabrics, adding up to the amount listed for the Main fabric.  The Contrast fabric will form the large diamond, and should be easy to see against the Main ones.

    Optional Materials:

A square ruler at least as big as your chosen block size.  And/or a square of cardboard cut to your size (including seam allowance) to be used to periodically check progress.
