In this class, you’ll learn how to use a sewing machine to secure your quilt. These are the stitches that hold the quilt layers together and add a design element to the quilt.

Areas to be covered include choosing batting, layering and basting the quilt. We’ll also discuss to how choose a quilting design and what effects different threads can have. You will learn both straight line quilting (using a Walking Foot), and free motion stitching (using a Darning Foot.)

This is a skill-building class. You will not necessarily have a finished project at the end.

For students who have completed Quilting 101, please bring your “Squared-Off” quilt top. To layer and quilt your project, you’ll need backing material (5/8 yd) and a piece of batting 22” square. But also, bring the materials described below so that you can practice the techniques first.

Prerequisite

Quilting 101: Introduction to Patchwork, or commensurate experience with quilting techniques including accurate use of a rotary cutter and achieving a 1/4” seam allowance. These techniques will not be covered in this class.

Required Materials (sold separately)

  • 1 yard solid color quilting cotton
  • 1 yard patterned quilting cotton
  • Craft size batting (about 36" x 45")
  • One spool of 50wt cotton thread to contrast with your solid fabric.
  • Safety pins - large and rust-proof
