Jaime's Portuguese Caftan
I went on a bit of a sewing spree before going to Portugal - traveling out of the country is always a motivator for me to assess my wardrobe. I decided I needed more comfortable and cool dresses to wear since we were traveling for almost three weeks and Portugal was sure to be hot-hot-hot.
Pattern: Charlie Caftan by Closet Case Patterns, View B with higher sleeve
Fabric: Celestial Cotton/Rayon by Alexia Abegg for Cotton + Steel
Size Made: 6
Modifications: Lengthened by 4" to make tea length
I was 100% inspired by this Charlie Caftan that Karyn of the Workroom made. It looked so perfect, I basically made the same one with a different print. I'm so glad I did! I love this dress so much.
This dress is a bit complicated right out the gate making the gathered front placket. It is nice to get the complicated bits out of the way and after you finish the placket it sews up so quick! The facings are super fast and are my favorite way to finish any neck or armholes. I decided to lengthen this dress to make it more of a tea length. This added length makes me feel more comfortable when wearing it exploring new cities all day. A little added coverage for comfort. I love it!
This is my first time working with the cotton/rayon blend from Cotton + Steel. It’s such a dream. The cotton makes its easier to sew than a 100% rayon would be. The rayon makes it virtually wrinkle-free and drapey. It’s another perfect travel dress! No irons! Comfortable, cool and stylish - I get so many compliments when I wear it. Charlie Caftan: A+
Check back next week for a whole week of posts about our trip to Portugal!
