Amber's Concentric Table Mat in Making Magazine

I'm ecstatic to have a sweet little patchwork project in the newest Making zine. Carrie Bostick Hoge's third issue, Dots, features 30+ patterns and tutorials, as well as essays from a selection of inspiring folks. Sewing, knitting, embroidery, crochet, quilting--you'll even find a blueberry afternoon cake in this beautiful and comprehensive quarterly!

Making Magazine Issue 3

There are so many stunning projects in this issue, and I want to make them all! I'm very honored to be included with the likes of Maura Ambrose, Kristine Vejar, Mary Jane Mucklestone, Rae Hoekstra, Shannon Cook, Tif Fusell, Maryanne Moodie, Anna Graham, Cecily Glowick MacDonald, Hannah Fettig, Olga Buraya-Kefelian, Emily Wessel, Cal Patch and Carrie Bostick Hoge, to name just a few of the amazing folks in this issue of Making.

When creating the Concentric Table Mat, I found inspiration in shibori techniques. Much like shibori, the process for piecing this accessory is done by hand--each circle freehand cut without the use of a template. Simple curves, repetitively cut and sewn become almost meditative to create. Allowing the hand process to dictate the result creates a softer pattern, beautiful in its slight imperfection.

The project I stitched up is quick becoming a favorite in my own kitchen. It's as pretty as it is functional. With a thermally reflective batting, this versatile table mat can be used to protect hands or tabletops from hot dishes, cover a casserole to keep it warm or wrap around frozen foods on the way home from the market.

The 20" mat is made up of sixteen 5" blocks. You could alter the number of blocks to create a larger or smaller quilting project. Four blocks could make a small hot pad, or you could make more blocks for a quilt.

I hope you love this making little project as much as I loved creating it! Share your creations with #concentrictablemat on instagram.

Looking for Making No3 dots or the Making Black & White issues. Any chance you have both or either one?
