I have long been enthralled and fascinated by how certain Instagram fashionistas and knitters can be so chic--seemingly effortlessly--from every angle. James Watts, for example, is such a person. All the photos of his Earth and Air sweater looked easy-breezy, and all the testers looked awesome. Plus, I had never knit two-color brioche before and wanted to learn.

Earth and Air is a cropped sweater with adjustable half-length sleeves. It’s knit using a worsted-weight main color and a fluffy, lace-weight contrast color (such as mohair silk or what I used here: suri alpaca with a silk core). I was fascinated by the textures and colors and the ever-so-slightly see through quality of this pattern, and it was an instant love from the moment I saw tester photos.

I chose the yarns I did from Fancy Tiger Crafts because I wanted the sweater to be next-to-skin soft to maximize those columns of translucence, and I wanted the colors to be quite bold and contrasted. I’m so happy with how mine turned out.

The pattern is a breeze to knit up, and a great first brioche pattern if you’ve never done it before, like me. James gives very clear instructions, and it knit up in no time since it’s knit at a wide-open gauge with US10.5 (6.5mm) needles. The brioche is worked in the round as well as flat, so it’s a great chance to learn how to do it every which way--and you can pretty much make it with whatever style you’d like by using interesting color contrast choices as well as yarn weight contrast!

I feel so breezy, chic, and fashion-forward in it, and the boxy shape and half sleeves are super easy to wear for the spring. I’m so glad I made this sweater and I hope you will give it a try!
