How long have you been sewing and how did you get started?

I've been sewing since high school. I took a sewing class as an elective and the rest is history!

Tell us about your studio/workspace, what are your favorite aspects?

Right now my sewing space is in my bedroom. I have a designated space for everything. My favorite aspect is my bookshelf where I store my fabric, sewing books and various notions.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

I think my design aesthetic is eclectic. I love textures, prints, surprise elements, stripes and vintage style lines.

You co-host the series "The Cookout" with your friend and fellow creator, Nef. Would you tell us a little bit about that series?

Our series was created after the death of George Floyd. We decided to go live one night to discuss our feelings on the matter and the call to make it a series was overwhelming. So we made it a weekly live show where we share our experiences and stories as black women and we discuss hot topics in pop culture and in the sewing community.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

My typical work day consists of beginning work at 6am for my day job. In between calls and emails I sew and work on projects. I'm very fortunate to have a full time job that allows a lot of flexibility and autonomy.

Just for fun, what is your favorite mythological animal?

My favorite mythological animal is a Phoenix. I love that it represents rebirth and that it rises from it's own ashes. It reminds me of the Bible verse that God gives us beauty for ashes.

We are so happy to be able to support Raven’s work and showcase her beautiful makes! If you would like to follow her sewing work, blog, and tutorials, you can find her on Instagram as @ravenmaureen_ . To watch her series “The Cookout”, follow @thecookoutseries.
